This group of dwellings (NY784498), 3km due south of Ninebanks,
probably provided accommodation for miners either at mines in the Wellhope
valley to the west (Wellhope Head, Heartyy Cleugh, Mo Hope Head) or the Coal
Cleugh/barney Craig mine to the east. It would appear that the Wellhope valley mines were at
their most active between about 1760 and 1820 but Coalcleugh was employing 278
men underground as late as 1862. Middle Harsley is now
just a few stones in a field but Low Harsley - now Nether Harsley - is still a working farm
while The Nook has been converted to a private dwelling.

The Nook |
Peter and Susannah moved from Wooley High House to Harsley before the birth of Christopher (1787), Barbara (1790) and Jane (1792). Peter's son John was living at Nook with his wife Ann by the birth of his son Peter in 1795 but later moved to Dryburn Hall. Peter's third son Francis married Margaret from neighbouring Broadlea and was living at Nook by 1800, moved to Appletree Shield around 1803, then back to (Wall) Nook1 by 1812 before moving to Bochim (Allendale? Garrigill? Nenthead?)
At some point both Peter and Susannah moved to Black Cleugh (possibly when his nephew Peter moved out to Nenthead about 1800) where they died in 1829 and 1831 respectively
Peter's second son Peter was living with his parent's at time of the birth of his first son, also named Peter in 1804
