Percy Survey 1578 - Tenant John Hartley
tenement, Kirk Close adj. (2a 3r): rent 2/-, moulture & walker: 2.5d. Total
2/2.5
Nicholas Hartley (c1610-1675) made his will at Church House to be succeeded by his son Thomas (c1630-1700) who died in 1700. Thomas's son Nicholas (1656-1717) in turn passed on the tenancy to his son Thomas. Thomas Hartley (b1688) married Jane Nicholson in 1723 and they had 9 children during the following 16 years of which at least the last four were born at Church House. It was probably this Thomas, whose wife Jane died in 1758, who was tenant in 1758.
1758 survey: Churchhouse etc.; tenant Thomas Hartley of Churchhouse (good house & stable called Boot Barn- QR 5/2 + house & barn & stable called Churchhouse + c30 acres good land + c10 acres rough land- QR 2/2.5- has some timber; annual value £22)
Thomas's second surviving son, John inherited Bridge-end, Bought, from his grandfather so we may assume that his first son, Thomas (b1724), took over Church House.
[In 1782 Jonathon Dickinson was the occupier of Church House, though it was still owned by Thomas Hartley. Thomas Hartley Junior was the occupier in 1783 and 1785. but Elizabeth Hartley was the occupier in 1796 (a Thomas Hartley still being the tenant). (A Thomas Hartley married an Elizabeth Nicholson in 1779). I have not tracked the Hartleys through the Parish Registers for this period but it could be that THomas married Elizabeth but died before his father.]
