In 1578, the Percy Survey gives the following information (with acknowledgement to "Past Presented")
Edward Nicholson [of Paddock Wray 1587]- tenement house, barn etc., garth + arable & meadow close adj. (2.5a), Wood How + Moss (parcel of wood ground, 3a), with common: rent 3/-, also an old improvement "lying above the said tenement" (3a): 6d, moulture & walker 2d. Total 3/8 yearly
and in the Eskdale 24 book of 1587:-
HOWES, GILBANKE, PADOCKWREY
"And for the Drifts of Edward Tyson, John Nicholson, Richard Tyson and Edward Nicholson and every one of these to drive their Sheep in their own Order to Cookrigge, and in his own Order every one of them till they come on the Westside of the Greathow, and to drive them forth to the Broadtongue as farr as the h[blank] upon their own Ground and then let them go."
PADOCKWRAY, HOLLINGS & HOWES
"Richard Tyson's Cow Drift of Hollings, John Nicholson's of Howes, & Edward Nicholson's of Padockwray with their Cowpasture" ... "every one of them shall drive forth at the Stongs, and so to any Place to the stoney Gate."
Nicholas Nicholson was tenant at the time of the General Fine of 1633. Following his death it passed in 1651 to his daughter Katherine, who sold the property to John Tison in 1652.
John Hartley of padeckwray is mentioned in John Dickinson's will of 1706. He died in 1761 but his son Edward was already tenant of Paddockwray in 1759.
Edward Hartley made his will in 1769 at Paddack Wray, leaving the property to his son Henry. It appears that Henry may also have inherited Whincop and sold Paddockwray to Henry Hartley of Birkerthwaite, in 1779, who sold it on to the Reverend Aaron Marshall.
Elizabeth Tyson (née Marshall?) wife of George Tyson inherited the property in 1815 and George sold it to Jonathan Benson in (1883? 1833?) It passed from Jonathan to his son (also Jonathan) in 1852; he sold it to Joseph Porter Tyson in 1875 who gave it to Towers Tyson in 1876. Towers Tyson was still in possession in 1894.
The connection with a property Wood Nook is at present unclear to me, but it appears that George Tyson may have retained a cottage on the land which was in the possession of a descendant, George Marshall Tyson, in 1894.
