Low Holme NY143007

Also known as Law Holme

Location shown on main Miterdale page.

It appears that "Low Holme is a freehold parcel of the manor of Muncaster, although in Eskdale parish and the valley of the Mite. [However] the sheep belonging to it had their heave on Eskdale Moor in the Lordship of Egremont."3

Thus the fines in the Eskdale manorial records are for the grazing above Low Holme on Ban Garth and other 'improvements'.

The ownership of the freehold of Low Holme and the tenancy of the grazing do not necessarily appear to have changed in synchronism.

George Porter of Weary Hall, Bolton, near Wigton, appears to have been the lawyer or steward for the Penningtons of Muncaster and to have received property from them.3

The Muncaster Court Rolls contain lists of freeholders, who owed suit of court; customary tenants, from whom the jury was formed; and cottagers.
