Low Place

Grid Reference NY154018  Also known as Nether Place

Location shown on main Miterdale page.

Nether Place was tenanted by William Nicholson, son of Nicholas Nicholson at the time of the General Fine of 1547?. Still under William Nicholson in the  Percy Survey 1578, and the Eskdale 24 book 1587.

John Nicholson of Low Place owed John Vickars 5/- in 1613

The William Nicholson who was the tenant in 1633 was probably his son, but it is likely he died in 1636 leaving young children. A William Nicholson surrendered the lease to Henry Nicholson1, cloth-worker of London in 1638. Henry mortgaged it to Edward Payler of Petworth in 1639 and sold it to John Hudson in 1656.

[But in 1674 14 Oct 1674: Joseph Mowson (and his brother John, added late) atti Miterdale (11/6) with parcel of land (7d) surr by William Nicholson (by attoenry Edward Stanley Esq.; letter dated 12 Oct 1674). E.S. signs. (fine £12/10/0)]

In 1652 William Hartley of Miterdale Head left a legacy "And I give to Willm Nycholson sonne of Henry of Lowplace fyve shillinges".

By 1732 John Wilkinson of Bakerstead had probably acquired and moved into Low Place since in 1732-1737 John Wilkinson of Low Place is nominated to various posts by the Eskdale Jury (Manor Greave, Constable, Pounder and Sesser)

1750 William Russell is presented by John Wilkinson for wintering sheep in Irton parish then putting them on Eskdale common in summer. By 1750 the tenancy (along with Browyeat)  had been acquired by Stephen Nicholson, the blacksmith at Randelhow. (John Wilkinson apparently returned to Bakerstead). Stephen died in 1814 at the fine age of 101. 'Brow Gate' (along with Bakerstead and Low Place) was inherited by his son, Reverend Thomas Nicholson vicar of Muncaster and, on his death in 1825, by Thomas's son John Nicholson, gentleman, of Nether Stainton.

In 1820 Edward Rigg was presumably tenant of Thomas Nicholson since he termed himself 'of Low Place' in his will. He was succeeded by his son William who is listed as tenant in the 1829 Parson and White directory.

In the 1861 Cumberland Directory, Charles Norman is listed as the farmer of Low Place.

Notes

1    In 1608 John Nicholson of Miterdale ('a young man') left a legacy to his brother Henry, a glover. Is this the same Henry?
