The well-known difficulty in accessing primary
written sources for Irish genealogical research
(Parish registers, pre-1901 census records) means
that much of the information on the individuals
listed on this page has been obtained from knowledge
retained within individual families and then passed
on in family trees, memoirs etc. I fully acknowledge
that most of the information has been plaguarised
from sources on the Internet (though as advised by
Tom Lehrer I call it 'research') and it carries an
even stronger health warning than usual and anyone
researching their ancestry must
recheck the sources where possible and make their
own judgements.
The Swindles are almost certainly of English
origin and will have settled in one or more of the
'plantations' that were imposed upon Ireland. The
distribution suggests one settler in County Kerry in
the late seventeenth century or earlier and possibly
several in Ulster. The earliest reference I have
found is to a William Swindle in Derry in 1669.
A Wikipedia article gives a good summary of
the plantations (
"Plantations of Ireland").
Many Swindles emigrated to the USA in the 19th
century and much of the information has come from
their American descendants.
The spelling Swindle and Swindell must be
considered synonymous but it is interesting that the
spelling Swindle is much more common throughout
Ireland (as in the far north of England) rather than
the Swindell(s) which became more common in Cheshire
and Derbyshire. I suspect that this is a consequence
of Irish pronunciation patterns rather than anything
else, though I have no personal experience.
I (the author of this site) must emphasis
that I have no family connnection to anyone
listed on this page and I have collected the
information from general interest only. However I
will certainly correct any errors made known to me
and would be interested in further information.
