Notes

1    All information originally passed on by Joan Shrewsbury

2    Marriage record has Henry Gregg  and Isabel(l) Scott

3    On the family tree passed to me by Joan Shrewsbury

"I believe Henry was the son of Ephraim Grigg of Langdale (I forget the name of the farm) but they were Baptists, and their records are notoriously difficult to get hold of. I have Ephraim's will; he died young, but mentions three children (not named) all under 21. His wife didn't have a will."

On another sheet "Henry Grigg, b. Langdale about 1760, a slater"

On current evidence (2004) I believe it less likely that Henry was the son of Ephraim, but rather descended from the Greggs of Bassenthwaite / Wythop. (AJS)

4    Matthew Grigg was born at Thornthwaite just before Sarah, the eldest known child of Henry, was baptised in Thornthwaite in 1778.  This suggests that there is likely to be a close relationship between Matthew and Henry. It is worth noting that the registers at Thornthwaite only commence in 1775, though the chapel existed before that date.

Ray Thackray suggests that John Grigg, married 1767 at St Kentigern, might be the father of Matthew and the brother of Henry Grigg who married at St Kentigern in 1776.

It is just possible that John, Henry and Ephraem were sons of Ephraim Grigg of Great Langdale who married in Brigham in 1744 and died in 1750. Henry moved (back?) to Langdale around 1783. If John is the one buried in 1815 then he was born around 1748, which fits.
