Notes

1    Joan Shrewsbury references a detailed pedigree of the descendants of John and Jane, including a Thomas Gregg, slater, still living in Coniston, retired 'this year' (1981?) (Also see 'Slate from Coniston' p88, picture of Joe Gregg p79)

2    1851 Census

4    Hodge Close may be listed in the 1841 census as 'Hawkshead, Lancashire' but it is in what I might call Tilberthwaite, 1 mile south of Little Langdale (NY317018), and in 1851 John calls it Westmorland.

5    James "Blowfat" and Jane are listed on Ted Gregg's family tree. They are both in the 1861 census. A James Gregg is listed in the 1881 census aged 23, born at Kirkby Ireleth. He is boarding with William and Jane Rushforth, their one year old son William and William's 10 year old step daughter Hannah J. Gregg.

It is possible that Jane is the widow of a Gregg, but more likely that she herself was a Gregg and that Hannah is her illegitimate daughter. Jane is listed as born at Broughton 28 years old and hence born 1852/3. Jane might be James's older sister.
