Graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. Graduated 1839 then studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin. Qualified as a doctor three years later before joining the British Army in 1842.
Father had been a lieutenant Colonel, JP and High Sheriff in County Westmeath. Grandfather also an officer. Great-grandfather the Church of Ireland Arch-deacon of Cashiel, the Venerable Daniel Hearn (1693 - 1766).
