Notes
1 Mentioned in his father's will in 1612 in terms that implied he was an adult (he already has his own sheep). However his grandfather only died in 1627, implying a birthdate no earlier than c1540. Allowing a minimum of 45 years for 2 generations gives an earliest birthdate for Henry of about 1585.
2 A John Nicholson died in 1608 ('a young man') mentioning his brother Henry, a glover. It is possible that Henry was William's younger son, learning a trade until the death of his elder brother. This relationship is very hypothetical.
3 In her will in 1628, Emma Nicholson, the widow of Henry grandfather, leaves a bequest to Henry Nicholson's two children. They were not mentioned in William's will in 1612. Margaret Russell thinks these two children may have been John Nicholson and Nicholas Nicholson. Certainly Henry Nicholson was admitted to Yeathouse in 1627 and Nicholas's son Nicholas Nicholson was in possession of Yeathouse in 1718. The older Nicholas was married in 1637 and apparently tenant of Randlehow before his death (between 1648 and 1655). However I would have expected Henry to have named his eldest son after his father. If the two elder children were daughters and William either died or sold up and followed a different occupation, then Nicholas could have acquired Yeathouse by other than direct succession.

5 Possibly father of
but they are not mentioned in Emma Nicholson's will, therefore presumably would have been born after 1628 and should have appeared in the Eskdale registers
