2 Margaret Russell believes that John is possibly brother to Nicholas Nicholson of Randlehow.
3 John and Elizabeth both left wills a,b In John's will he leaves £5 each to his sons William and Richard in full satisfaction of their part and portion stating 'And it is my Will and Mind that my two said sons William and Richard shall come themselves to receive their legacies herein by me given them, and give my Executors a Sufficient discharge for the same, or otherwise the legacies shall fall and be redeemed to my Estate' Sons William and Richard appear to have left the area by the time of John's will (1694?), as did many younger sons. Since son John continued to farm Slapestones it may be assumed he was the eldest son; son Henry established himself at Park Yeat; son Nicholas at Burnbooth
Elizabeth (died 1699) bequeathed '.. unto my sonne John, Twenty Shillings
in full part for his part forth of my Estate:
Item: I give unto his son Isaac ten shillings:
Item I give unto my sonne John Nicholson sonne John Nicholson ten shillings Upon
Condition, that is to say, that if my sonne John Nicholson and his sonne John
doo promise suffer law & Liberty unto my sonne Henry Nicholson to goo and come
through their ground at Slaestone when he hath occasion to goo and use to and
from Morthwaite During his Natural life.'
4 Birthdate estimated from his marriage
5 Admon of John Walker of Saltcoats, 8 November 1674. "Johem Nicholson de Askdall" is one of the witnesses, and signs with his fingerprint. (Communication from Dorothy Ravenswood 15/11/04) That John Nicholson could be this John or his son. (Both the John Nicholsons of Randlehow can sign their names).
6 I think it likely that this Isaac and Sarah are actually John's grandchildren by his son John.
