Notes

1    John was the son of Nicholas Nicholson of Yeathouse/Yatthouse and seems to have moved to Randlehow7 (to work with his uncle John Nicholson - died Jan 1718/19?). The tenancy of Yeathouse passed to Nicholas, the son of his elder brother Nicholas on the death of John's father Nicholas in 1719.

John apparently carried on his uncle's (and father's?) trade as blacksmith and passed it on to his son Stephen. ('The Family Forest' pp113-117 &tc). He left Stephen his smithy tools in his will.

2    Isabella from the records of baptism, Hartley from Nicholas Hartley's will. Nicholson Family Trees p375 say married Isabella Wasdale at Irton 1701 (d 1714) but I think this was a John Nicholson of Slapestones who had a daughter Jane in 1703.

3    The first two baptismal entries do not list a location, but do state John and Isabella. The second two entries just give John's name, but do state Randalhow.

4    'The Family Forest' page 117 lists John, Stephen and Sarah - but not Isaac. It also references the second marriage to Mary Sherwen. It seems Margaret Russell has listed the three children based on the will of Nicholas Nicholson who died before Isaac was born. This confirms Sarah and hence Isaac as the children of this John Nicholson.

5    Nicholson family trees suggests 1670. The 1683 birth date seems more probable and explains why Yeathouse passed to John's nephew Nicholas. It fits into a sequence with Nicholas, Bridget and Agnes.

6    The 1765 will of John Nicholson mentions the following relationships

Wife - Mary Nicholson
Sons - John Nicholson
           Stephen Nicholson
           Isaac Nicholson
Grandsons- John Nicholson
                   Isaac Nicholson
                   Stephen Nicholson
                   Thomas Nicholson
Granddaughters - Mary, the wife of James Russel
                         - Mary Gunson
'Other grandchildren'

7    The will of William Dixon implies that John was living at Randalhow in 1713
