Notes
1 Information from the will of Henry Nicholson and the will of his wife, Emma.
2 William is assumed to be the elder son since Emma excepted him from her bequests to the grandchildren.
3 A Nicholas Nicholson died in 1622, as evidenced by the administration order for his estate. The will of Elizabeth's brother William in 1612 mentions Nicholas Nicholson of Bought and Nicholas Nicholson of Browyeat. Nicholas Nicholson of Bought the younger owed John Vickars 20/- in 1613. The Percy Survey of 1578 mentions a Nicholas Nicholson having a joint tenancy with Henry Nicholson and another Nicholas Nicholson in Mitredale (probably Browyeat). The Eskdale 24 book of 1587 mentions a Nicholas Nicholson of Peel Place and a Nicholas Nicholson of Mitredale Head.
Nicholas Nicholson of Mitredale Head died in 1601 leaving a son William. This leaves the Nicholas Nicholson who died in 1622 and Nicholas Nicholson of Bought as the known candidates. But Nicholas Hartley owed ten shillings to Nicholas Nicholson of Browyeat in 1627 and Nicholas Nicholson of Miterdale paid £4 fine in 1634.
In the next generation there is also Nicholas Nicholson of Paddockwray who has a daughter Ann in 1641 and Nicholas Nicholson who married Bridget Robinson in 1637 - who may be the same individual.
