Probably the John Swindale who appears in trade registers for Appledore, Devon as a master mariner in 1857 and 1866 and as a ship owner in 1870. A retired master mariner in the 1871 census.

1 Phyllis, Sarah and Susanna are listed in the 1871 census for Appledore. The two boys are probably boarding at school elsewhere (eg Exeter, Bristol?). There are NO Swindales in Devon in the 1881 census
