William moved with his father from Derby, where George was a shoemaker, to Penrith where George had become railway signal manager in 1851. William started as a railway clerk in 1851 but became Station Master at Burton and Holme station between Lancaster and Kendal (1861 census) and probably then at Kirkby Lonsdale.
After William's death Jane moved down to Manchester where she set up a confectioner's shop (1881), eventually retiring to live with her daughter (1901).

1 The death of William Swindell Swindell [sic] was registered in the fourth quarter of 1870 in the Lunesdale district (FreeBMD 8e 443)
2 In the 1871 census Jane Swindell, daughter of Charles Marsden, is a widow in Kirkby Lonsdale. The marriage of Jane Marsden and William Swindell was registered in the fourth quarter of 1866 in Kendall (FreeBMD 10b 1001). The death above #1 is the only one for a William Swindell in the area. This suggests that the Jane Swindell whose death was registered in the third quarter of 1861 in Lancaster (FreeBMD 8e 383) may have been William's first wife.
3 William's father returned to his shoe making trade and followed his son first to Burton and then to Kirkby Lonsdale.
