His father having died when John was just 5, he was brought up by his mother, being educated at the Royal Academent at Gosforth (Portsmouth) (1861) and then at Cambridge (before 1871 when he was staying with his paternal grandmother). He then decided to study medicine at Cambridge (1881).
It is difficult to decide whether the name should be John Sudlow or John Ludlow. It is easy to confuse the L and the S in the writing of the time. The middle initial has more often been written S but I have chosen Ludlow as transcribed from the register of births.
