While John worked as a wheelwright, Mary Ann worked from home as a box maker - assembling the small, usually fancy, boxes. The census tells us how he moved from Cresent Place to Golden Lane to Bunhill Row to Playhouse Yard to Westmorland Road - and probably many other rented dwellings in between.
1 The birth of a John Swindells was registered
in the fourth quarter of 1845 in Shoreditch (FreeBMD 2 434).
There is no matching registration for a
John Swindell in 1846. As with his brother Charles it appears that
the entry in the IGI for the birth date is wrong in the church
registers.
John's age is given as 15 in the 1861 census, which corresponds to the 1845 date
2 The death of a John Swindell aged 73 in 1918 was registered in Shorditch (FreeBMD 1c 113)
