An assistant steward in 1851 - presumably assisting his father. In 1871 Charles was a Greengrocer at Blean in Kent (between Canterbury and Whitstable). In 1881 he was a 'Bath Chair Man' at Herne Bay, just East of Whitstable. In 1901, after the death of his wife in 1887, he is listed as a retired farmer in Lancashire.

Notes

1    Charles was obviously named after his father's employer, Charles Hampden Turner of  Rook's Nest, Godstone. The full name is given in the Index to the Register of Marriages (Hackney, 4th Quarter 1856 1b 272)

2    Elizabeth Sarah Hall was born in New Kent Road, Surrey in 1826/7 according to the 1871 and 1881 censuses. Her death was registered at Guildford at the age of 61 in the 3rd quarter 0f 1887 (Guildford 2a 49)

3    I have not found Charles in the 1861 census yet, but Edith is staying with her grand-parents at Nags Hall. Possibly Charles was looking for employment, even trying emigrating?

4    I have not yet found the registration of Charles' death, searching Free BMD 1881 - 1931 (July 2006). I have not found Charles in the 1891 census for Kent but 1901 he is living just south of Manchester as a retired farmer with a cousin, Kate Hurst.
