Notes

2   1841 Census - a gardener at Walton on the Hill, Lancashire. There appear to be a lot of gardeners here but it does not appear to be a 'great house'. 3 miles north of the centre of Liverpool.
      1851 Census - Sandford, Devon
1861 census - Salton, East Lothian

1881Maria is a widow living with her daughter in Norham

3    The birth of George Rattray was registered in the fourth quarter of 1846 in Crediton, Devon. (FreeBMD 10 76)
The birth of Christina Rattray was registered in the second quarter of 1849 in Crediton, Devon
The birth of Charles Rattray was registered in the second quarter of 1851 in Crediton, Devon (FreeBMD 10 83)

4    The death of a George Rattray aged 50 was registered in  the third quarter of 1866 in the Berwick district. (FreeBMD 10b 237). It is known from later records that the family established a connection with Norham on the England/Scotland border.

4    Maria is a widow at the time of the 1871 census

5    Birth not found in ScotlandsPeople Old Parish Records for 1814-1816 for Dirleton or East Lothian or Midlothian. Only records were Cupar (Fife), Kettle (Fife) Perth and Dundee.

6    From gravestone - E-mail from Malcolm Judd 2nd July 2010. Marriage not found in FreeBMD (or Scottish records).

7    I had originally suggested that Charles born 1851 was probably from a different family. I can't remember my reasoning but it was probably based on the absence of Charles from the 1861 census (in East Lothian) and on my having  encountered another Rattray family in Tiverton, Devon in 1861 with a son Charles of similar age.  However that second Charles was born in Middlesex 1848/9. Charles, son of George and Maria probably died between 1851 and 1861 but his death does not appear in the English BMD, nor in Scottish BMD 1854 - 1861. A Charles Rattray was buried on the 24th of June 1852 in Dirleton but he was aged 66.
