George initially followed his father's trade, then took over as innkeeper from his widowed mother at Norham on the English border but eventually returned to his gardener's trade at Westoe in South Shields.1

There is no mention of George's wife and daughter Maria with him on the 1871 census but George is listed as married. (Theyare staying with her brother James Muckle). The birth of Maria Rattray was registered in the first quarter of 1870 in the Berwick district (Free BMD 10b 378).
