At the time of her birth her father describes himself as 'merchant'. According to family stories passed down2 he was an engineer. Kate spent her childhood years in Brazil and Spain where her father would have been working, probably as a mining engineer, but by 1871 her mother, sisters and brother were living in London in Primrose Hill, just north of Regent's Park. Kate met and married Adolph Mähler, a merchant who had been born in Amsterdam but settled in London.
They lived initially in Hampstead, London, and then moved to ....
In 1891 the family had moved south of the river to Norwood
