Notes

Samuel was the clerk at a brewery living in London in 1861 and at Boscombe, near Bournemouth in 1881. In 1891 and 1901 Samuel and Elizabeth were living in retirement at Trefusis Cottage, Shamley Green, Surrey.

1    The significance of Samuel in tracing William Henry's ancestry is a note in the Rattray family history 'Little turquoise ring from Sam and Bessie Richard - Evelyn's Grandmother's brother-in-law'

2    The marriage of a Samuel Richards to Elizabeth Sarah Litchfield was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1851 at Brentford (FreeBMD v3 p21). The death of Samuel at the age of 91 was registered in Hambledon in the 4th quarter of 1912 (FreeBMD 2a  203). The death of his wife, aged 87, was registered, also in Hambledon, in the 1st quarter of 1917 (FreeBMD 2a 333)

3    At the time of the 1861 census Samuel's sister Elizabeth was staying with them, and also three children of his eldest brother, John.

3    Trefusis is in Mylor, just north of Falmouth.

4    The place, Shamley Green, rings  a bell with me (AJS). It could be from other family history research - untraced - or from when my grandmother returned to England every four years. I haven't yet found out where her mother spent her later years - possibly partly at Bourton-on-the -Water with her daughters but, just possibly at Shamley Green?
