Humfrey Stevenson of Muncaster and Cockermouth.

Younger brother of William Stevenson. Brother to Mathew Stevenson.

Apparently died without issue

Buried on the 8th of May 1613 at Muncaster, Cumberland leaving a will

Notes

1    In his will Humfrey names two brothers
    - William his eldest brother, with four legitimate children - Edward, a boy. and two daughters - and an illegitimate son John
    - Mathew, deceased, married to Francis, with children.

From the bequests he makes to Edward and John - a fustian doublet and white broadcloth britches respectively - both appear to be adult. Assume therefore that William married by 1593 and is likely to have been born before1565. Thus Humfrey can be assigned a rough birth date of c1570.

Humfrey leaves £5 apiece to William's (legitimate) children and £10 between Mathew's children (of which Mathew's widow owes Humfrey £6-13-4!). He leaves £1 apiece to the three daughters of Nicholas Stevenson (but no mention of sons). He also leaves 10/- apiece to Robert Atkinson's sons (except one who gets a satin doublet instead). His late employer's family get around 10/- apiece.

From the above I surmise that Nicholas Stevenson is not a brother but maybe a cousin, or even uncle.

2    Humfrey had obviously worked for the father of Alice Tolson at Cockermouth and probably lived with the family since he made bequests to Alice, Dorothy and Jane. Parish registers for Cockermouth only start in 1632. The bequests in his will suggest that cloth might have been the trade.
