Notes
1 This Hugh Swindle is recorded as being born in the Hexham area of Northumberland rather than in Allendale. However this could be an error in the response to the enumerator's questions in either 1851 or 1881. There is only one Hugh Swindle in the whole of England in 1881 (and one in Scotland of Irish extraction) and it seems a considerable coincidence that he was born the same year as Nancy Swindle's grandson.
2 The marriage of Hugh Swindle was registered in the second quarter on 1867 in Hexham (FreeBMD 10b 388). The marriage of Ann Armstrong is recorded on the same page. The death of Hugh Swindle at the age of 44 was registered at Morpeth in the first quarter of 1888 (FreeBMD 10b 209)
3 Thomas's first wife Margaret Dawson was the daughter of Hugh Dawson.
