Mr Jabez Swindale, chemist and druggist. Never been robust...born Castleside 1866, father died when 3...Blackhill Infant School, Old Church School, Durham Road, Wesleyan School, Leadgate where his uncle Mr T.J. Leonard was headmaster. 5 years apprenticeship to drapery business with Mr Jacob Dowson, Derwent Street. Went to Birmingham and then to Wigan but had to resign due to ill health.

Taken into surgery of Dr George Renton at Blackhill as his dispenser.

In 1896 passed exams of Pharmaceutical Society. 1895 set up business in Consett, Leadgate and Blackhill. Member of Wesleyan Church, Blackhill. Superintendent of Sunday School

Died 1939 in Hebburn on Tyne 1

Jabez was a draper's apprentice at 14 at the time of the 1881 census. In 1901 he was running his own Chemists shop at 23 & 24 Bessemer Street, Benfieldside, Consett. A list of shops on Hebburn Quay '1940 onwards' gives 36, Lyon Street, Pharmacist, owner Jabez Swindale. 2

3    Francis Swindale was buried in Blackhill Cemetery on the 30th of August 1901 aged 3.
