1 It seems more likely that Jackson is the illegitimate son of one of Andrew and Jane's sons - probably William. Jackson Swindle and William Swindle and his mother are all living in Monk Hesleden at the time of the 1881 census.
2 Seaham is on the coast, north east of Durham and Monk Hesleden is 4 miles to the south.
3 Jackson is an onsetter (i.e. loading the coal into tubs, or wagons, in the mine) at the time of the 1881 census, but has risen to colliery manager by 1908.
