Son of John Swindle and Thomasine Gray, baptised on the 24th of July 1825 at Chester-le-Street, County Durham
Married Margaret (Mason in 1844?)2
No known children but apparently brought up John Brown as their son (probably son of John's sister Ann)3
1 A coal miner living near his father at Wagtail Cottages, Holmside, County Durham at the time of the 1851 census; at Plawsworth (north of Durham) in 1861, at New Stanley in 1871, 33 Joicey's Square, Stanley in 1881, and Front Street, Havannah, Tanfield in 1891
2 John and Margret married between the 1841 and 1851 censuses. There are only two marriages for a John Swindle registered in County Durham in this period. The marriage of a John Swindle was registered in Chester-le-Street in the fourth quarter of 1844. The marriage of Margaret Mason is listed on the same page. (FreeBMD 24 p37) The other marriage was registered in Durham in the third quarter of 1846 but no Margaret is listed on the same page.
3 In 1861 a 4 year old John Brown is listed as lodging with John and Margaret. In 1871 he is listed as John Swindle, son. This is probably a son of John's sister Ann, who married a William Brown in 1856.
