Notes
1 Information from Mary Pattinson
2 Ages of John, sister Sarah, niece Mary in the 1881 census at Low Houses, Alston agree with those given by Mary Pattinson. Low Houses is just north of Garrigill, below Middlehouses.
4 Lowhouses farm in 1831 was valued at nearly twice the rent of Middle House North Farm, implying that it could probably sustain a family without a supplementary income from lead mining. ["More Rents in Alston Moor 1831", Michael V. Wardell, Cumbria FHS August 2003 - from PRO Ref: ADM 79/53].
