In 1871 John was living at Ninebanks with his wife and stepson, working as a lead miner. At the time of the 1881 census, John was providing a home at Haugh Cottage, Henshaw (6km west of Haltwhistle) to his sister, Sarah, and her child, and a step-son Thomas Cowing. It therefore seems that John married a widow, Sarah Cowing. In 1891 John is living with his wife and two children at Common House, 1km north of Melkridge, between Henshaw and Haltwhistle. At the time of the 1901 census he is living at White Craig, just 1km north of Haltwhistle. His sister's son John is still living with John and his wife. In 1911 he had married Annie and was living at Corrodale House, Haltwhistle, still working as a coal miner.
