She could be an illegitimate daughter of John, George or their sisters Susannah
or Jane (who probably died in 1868). The
latter would explain why
i) Mary Ann was brought up by her grandmother
ii) Mary Ann is named Swindle
iii) Mary Ann named no father on her marriage certificate3
