1 The birth of a a Mary Jane Swindle was registered in the third quarter of 1893 in the Hexham registration district
2 The 1901 census lists Mary Jane and Susanna both in the Hexham workhouse - and no other Swindles.
3 Information from Norman Swindle.
4 There is a strong possibility that Mary Jane was born in the workhouse in Hexham. Susannah was unable to give her own birthplace and in 1891 was living in Benwell. The most likely reason for the ability of the workhouse to 'know' that Mary was born in Hexham is that she was born at the workhouse.
