Peter probably followed his father and grandfather into working at the Whitfield (lead smelting) Mill. From 1745 the Whitfield Mill was phased out of production by the London Lead Company in favour of their Nenthead Mill and was closed in 1811. This probably caused the family to move to Wooley High House in Allendale around 1778 to work at the Allen Mill but within ten years they had moved to Harsley in West Allendale, presumably for Peter to work in the lead mines around there.
Notes
1 Peter and Susannah were married by licence 1st Jan 1771 but their first recorded child was not born till 1774. No other Peter is known who could be the father of this John so I agree with Anne Roberts that John is probably the first, unrecorded, son of Peter and Susannah. Note that a John Swindle is the witness at the wedding of Peter (son of Peter).
