2 Both Thomas and Jane are said to be from Pithill in the marriage entry. Pithill is now better known as Beamish, the site of the North of England Open Air Museum; it is a few miles south-east of the parish of Ryton and one mile north of Twizell and two miles west of Urpeth (see the baptism entries for Mary and Jane). Birtley, where John Swindell's last son was born is three miles to the north-east. In the entries for Hannah and Barbara, Thomas is said to be a Native of Ryton.
3 Jane Swindle is buried at St Mary and St Cuthbert, Chester le Street, County Durham five years later aged 71 on the 23rd of December 1835
A Jane Charlton was born on the 14th of June 1764 and baptised on the 3rd of September 1764 in Sunderland, County Durham, daughter of John and Ann Charlton. (IGI). Another Jane Charlton, daughter of Matthew and Margt. Charlton, was baptised on the 20th of October 1765 in Whickham, County Durham - but although more local she would only have been 70 in 1835.
4 It was assumed that Thomas was the Thomas, son of John Swindell, baptised on the 17th of February 1760 in Ryton, County Durham. However this conflicts with his age at burial. The sequence of baptisms implies that the birth would not have been five years previously. However it is quite possible that his wife Jane - or whoever looked after the burial - did not know his age when the burial entry was made.
