Gardener at Burghley but by 1905 Charles had become a Fruiterer in Lincoln, making jams from any spoiled fruit; up to 1907 at least he was at 92 Newlands and in 1909 he was at 9 Monk Road. By 1911 he must have been working in Leicester, since Benjamin's birth was registered as occurring at 46, Hinkley Road, Leicester where Charles was manager of a Fruiterer and Florist shop. Charles established a Florist's business in Braunstone Gate, Leicester and four of his sons - Stan, Ben, Bruce and Roy - followed him in the trade with their own shops in Leicester.
