Subject: WHITFIELDS!!!

Dear Sheila,

I've been reworking the notes I sent you.  They were so convoluted, I had a hard time making sense of them.
Now I understand them better---but perhaps that's because I've spent a couple of hours redoing them.  Maybe these will be hard for you to understand also.

I am pleased to be corresponding with you because it sounds as if you are a descendant of the Teasdale and Mary of Shield Bank.  Perhaps you will know Mary's maiden name---or if you don't know, maybe you can find out.
As I said before, it's been ten years or more since I did the research on the Whitfields.  I learned to love them--I've been to the Allendales three times---I can see many of their homes in minds eye when I start to think of them---I have massive amounts of data on the Whitfields---but much of it has gone cold on me, I'm sorry to say.

I was thrilled with the pictures you sent.  Thank you for doing that.

Now here are my notes of Teasdale Whitfield, son of Teasdale and Mary Dawson attached.

If the three attachments do not make it---let me know and I will send them separately.

I'll be anxious to hear from you!   When I do, then I'll start working on Teasdale #821 notes.
They are likely to have some more clues for you.
Carol Minson

Carol Minson’s notes of

Teasdale Whitfield who married Mary Dawson.      Dec 2003 revision

1775 Jul 20:  Baptism of “Teasdale Whitfield son of Teasdale and Mary (Dawson) Whitfield, of HOPEHEAD SWINHOPE."

(Source:  Salt Lake film # 252518 of the Allendale Parish Register of Baptisms:

The parish register films have individual names of the homes of “Hopehead (in) Swinhope,”  which the IGI lacks.  IGI just says “Allendale” which is the parish over the named places.

[Teasdale is #827, son of Teasdale Whitfield #821, for Carol’s use, (WHIO159H, p.32)]

1788 Apr 29:  Teasdale #821 was a miner.  "Ellis & lad; Thos Curry & son; TEASDALE WHITFIELD (age 58)  & SON (age 13)-- agree to raise lead in their do (sic) ground at 200/pr ton 22 foot to the ton and to carriage smelting etc and work her till the 29th of Sept 1788."   (Allenheads Mine Records.)

(Cm; It fits nicely, but do we really know it was the same “Teasdale son of Teasdale?”)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHO is the Teasdale Whitfield of Shield bank, wife Mary, who had twins William and Sarah   b 6 Aug 1820?   And WHO were Teasdale’s parents?

Teasdale #821 was the youngest of his siblings.  He had two older brothers, neither of whom had, to my knowledge, sons named Teasdale.

Teasdale #821 and Mary (Dawson) Whitfield, who lived at Hopehead in Swinhope (see picture),   had ten children including three sons:

#1 son:   Thomas the first son, had a son Teasdale, b 1792.  But this Teasdale md Sarah Bell and migrated to Canada in 1831. (C Minson has good documented sources on this family.)

#2 son:   Teasdale #827, might be the Teasdale Whitfield of Shield Bank-- If so, he would have been age 45 when the twins were born in 1820.  Possible

#3 son:   Joseph, the last son of Teasdale #821, did not have a son named Teasdale.

I do not know how/why, but I felt Teasdale & Mary Whitfield of Shield Bank were

"Not my direct line, but very close to the others."   If Teasdale of Shield Bank is Teasdale #827, he’s the brother of Thomas, my direct line.  That’s definitely “very close.”

Teasdale Whitfield #827 was married to a Mary also.  (source of name of his wife?)

The maiden name of Mary Whitfield of Shield Bank is still in question.  Was she a Stokoe or a Vickers?

.

The data on the 5 children baptized in St. Peters and Allenheads with a father named "Teasdale" is confusing.

1807 Feb 21:  A Teasdale Whitfield md a Mary Vickers in St. Peters.  (Teasdale Whitfield#827, b 1775 may have md. 21 Feb 1807 to Mary Vickers in St. Peters. (He'd be 32). (The only mg I can find to fit.)  If so, they had:

1807 Apr 20: "THOMAS, 1st son, parents native of Allenheads- Teasdale Whitfield and Mary Vickers of Swinhope."

1814 Jul 17:  "JOHN, parents Teasdale Whitfield and Mary Vickers of Swinhope."   baptism at St Peter & Allenheads Chap.

There is another child- listed in St. Peter & Allenheads PVR- whose father was a Teasdale:

1809 May 6: "TEASDALE, 3RD SON  b, Teasdale Whitfield and Mary Stokoe.   baptism at St Peter & Allenheads Chap.

So WHO was the mother of the twins, Mary Stokoe or Mary Vickers.?

1820 Aug 6: WILLIAM and SARAH (twins), (parents) Teasdale Whitfield, miner, & Mary of Shield Bank.   Baptism at St Peter &  Allenheads Chap.

1829 Aug 1: “TEASDALE WHITFIELD of this parish (records at Allenheads & St. Peters,

Parish of Allendale) mg by banns to Elizabeth Spotswood of this parish.  In presence of Robert & George Spotswood and Frances Nattress."   (This is probably the above named  "TEASDALE, 3RD SON of Teasdale Whitfield and Mary Stokoe.

Since he was born in 1809 he would be 20 years old in 1829.)

CHILDREN of Teasdale and  Elizabeth:

ELIZABETH, b 11 Jul 1830, Teasdale Whitfield, miner of Swinhope & Elizabeth.  baptism at St Peter & Allenheads Chap.

GEORGE,  b 15 Apr 1832,   Teasdale Whitfield,  miner of Swinhope &  Elizabeth.   baptism at St Peter & Allenheads Chap.

JOHN,  b 16 MAR 1834,     Teasdale Whitfield,   miner of Swinhope &  Elizabeth.

at St. Peters Chapel.

TEASDALE, b 19 MAY 1836,  Teasdale Whitfield,  miner of Swinhope & Elizabeth.

at St. Peters Chapel.

TEASDALE WHITFIELD of Swinhope, buried 11 May 1838, age 27, St.

Peters Chapel.   Very likely the Teasdale born 1809(=age 29)

_____________

Miscellaneous items....I’m not sure how the following fit into this puzzle:

1839 Mar 21: Marriage of Mary Whitfield to Joseph Pears, F- Teasdale Whitfield.

(Could this be another daughter of Teasdale #827?)

1840 Mar 14:  Marriage of Teasdale Whitfield to Frances Ward 14 at St Peters.

1842 May 4:  Thomas son of Teasdale Whitfield /Frances   chr 4 May 1842.         """

(see below)

letter sent to Dorothy Smart May 1, 1996:

My problem concerns a John Whitfield,  son of Teasdale and Mary Whitfield of Swinhope

1814 Jul 10: baptized.  .  (You said your g g grandfathers sister, Frances, md this John Whitfield.)

In 1992, I had extracted this information  from "Baptisms of St Peters &

Allenheads Chapelry 1813-1830."    You sent me the same information with one major addition: "son of Teasdale Whitfield and Mary Vickers." (of Swinhope.)  I know that

Teasdale md. a Mary Vickers, in 1807, and they had a son that year.  But

it appears that Mary Vickers may have died because  in 1809 there is a

son born to Teasdale and Mary Stokoe of Swinhope.

I have been studying the baptisms of St. Peters and Allenheads from two

or three other sources for the birth of your John Whitfield in 1814 at

Swinhope.  The other sources state parents as "Teasdale Whitfield and

Mary"-- period.  Might you have assumed the mother's last name to be

"Vickers"?  I'm hoping so.  But since this is your line you may have

additional information that I do not.  I'll be anxious to find out what you

know.

Now it is   12/8/2003 and I do not know her response.

I do have her letters.
