Subject: Jacob Vipond of Redwing Chapel

Hello Alan,
I just was looking at the Garrigill page on genuki and ended up on your website. I'm doing some Vipond research myself, and ran across a will you might be interested in. Jacob Vipond, who married Ann Fleming, had an older brother named John who apparently died without any children. He names his brothers Joseph, Thomas and Jacob, plus his sister Mary in his will, as well as all of his nieces and nephews who were then living. (Jacob's 4 youngest children - including your Susannah - weren't born yet, and one of Joseph's children died young and also wasn't mentioned.) I didn't transcribe the will - I'm getting better at reading the old writing, but still struggle - but I did copy it onto a CD and extracted the names for my records. The will was proven in 1778 - John Vipond of Cragg Shield - will T:52, on page 78. The LDS Family History Library Film Number is 090,916 if you'd like to see it, or I could try to e-mail a copy to you.
I also noticed that you pulled the marriage of Thomas Vipond and Elizabeth Vipond, md 26 May 1727. They are the parents of your Jacob and the other 4 children; the children's death records give their relationship to Thomas, and say "1st son" "3rd son", etc. Here's the father's death record: "Thomas, husband of Elizabeth Vipond of Cragg Shield d. 14 Dec 1766, age 67" - so born about 1699 and not in the christening records. I'm still in the process of reading earlier wills, so I'll let you know if I find a family with a Thomas of Cragg Shield. (I found the John will just last week.)
Let me know when you get this - I've written to several people whose e-addresses are no longer valid - and would love to correspond with you if you're available. My husband has agreed to let me take a leave of absence from teaching this year to do family research, so I'm madly trying to document all the family I can. (My own Vipond is Mary who married George Millican in 1776. There are 5 Mary Viponds who get married between 1771-1778 in Alston or Garrigill, but only two in the local christening records who might fit, so I'm scouring wills to see if I can clarify MINE!)
Thanks -
