Correspondence from Norman Swindle 1/4/05
Alan,
I've not been doing much on the family history lately but attached is some
more information.
Whilst looking at your database I see my father Alan Edwin Dryden Swindle is
not listed on the main index although he is mentioned as the son of Dryden
Swindle but no information is displayed when I click on his name.
Regards,
Norman
1) Vipond Swindle (son of George and Mary nee Archer) married Sarah Armstrong
St. Catherines Index: DEC QTR 1859 Alston 10b 479
2) Frank Henry Dryden Swindle, about 24/3/1945, was living at:
1166 Broadview Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
3) Whilst double checking 1891 Census: West Road, Prudhoe (RG12 / 4245 folio 39
page 7)
1) Wife Mary Ann was born in Newburn not Allendale
2) There was a child missed off: John, aged 1 born in Prudhoe
This is confusing because there is no entry on St Catherines Index (Births)
There was another John born 11/6/1894 (Baptism Register) so did the first John
die young
but there is no entry in St Catherines’s Index (Deaths)
I think the entry on the census should have said Tom who was born Mar Qtr 1890
and christened on 26/2/1890 and
buried 30/5/1899 at Prudhoe.
4) Mary Swindle (nee Stout) appears to to have received charity payments
according to the church accounts of
St Johns, Garrigill. (Morpeth Record Office)
1) Starting in 1868 there is an entry:
“The bequest of Mr. Stephenson to eight poor widows having setlements in the
Parish
of Alston, and residing in the Chapelry of Garrigill. 2 - 0 - 0"
Mary was one of the beneficiaries with an entry for January 1st 1868:
Mary Swindle 5/- Middle Houses 63
This is repeated amost every year until the entry: Xmas Day 1886.
From 1871 her address is shown as Force Green.
It is believed Mary was buried 16/2/1887 at St. Johns, Garrigill, aged 81.
2) She also benefitted from “Wilkinsons’s Charity” whereby the sum of 5 pounds
was distributed
annually on 1st February. Mary received her first payment of 2/6 in 1870 and
then 2/- almost
every year after that until the last payment in 1887. Her address was shown as
Force Green for the
entries 1876 to 1879.
