Dear Mr. Swindale

Whilst searching the Web yesterday for information on Keswick, I came across reference to your Web Site, in relation to your family interest, in Swindale, Swindal, and Swindle.

With reference to Alfred Swindle, of Keswick, the illegitimate son of Susannah Swindle, the entry states married Jane Groall, whose father was Alexander Groall, blacksmith of Keswick.

The surname Groall is incorrect and should be Croall.

Alexander Croall is my Great, Great Grandfather who was born in Scotland in 1830, and married Jane Watt in May 1853.

They had several children, three born in Scotland, and seven others born in Cumberland, mainly in the parish of Crosthwaite, Keswick

Jane, born 1855 in Scotland, married Alfred Swindle

Alexander, born 1857 in Scotland, married Mary Ann Swindle

Peter, born 1859 in Scotland, is my Great Grandfather.

Your records of the 1881 census, states that an Alexander and Peter Cosall , were boarders in the household of Alfred Swindle, again translation is incorrect, and Alexander and Peter are Jane’s brothers.

The above record shows an address at Chapel Street, Dalton in Furness.

For your information, the 1891 census records show the family living at 44/46 Cleator Street, Dalton in Furness, where Alfred is now a Grocer. Also living at this address is Susannah, mother, listed as living of own means.

The marriage certificate of Alexander Croall and Mary Ann Swindle dated 1887, shows no father for Mary Ann, and living at Heads Lane, Keswick, whilst it states that Alexander was of late Cleator Street, but now of Butts Lane. Which suggests that the family was still at Cleator Street in 1887.

Your notes suggest that Mary Ann, is probably not the daughter of John or George , but it may be that Mary Ann was born prior to the marriage of John and Sarah in late 1867.

Hope you find this of interest

Regards

Peter Croall
