Notes
1 Door toll - a fee paid to the lord of the Manor in lieu
of market tolls
Kinniside is separated from
Ennerdale by the river Ehen, and consists mostly of fell land, dotted here and
there with scattered farmsteads. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor, but the
land is owned chiefly by the resident yeomen. In an inquisition taken in 1778,
Kinniside is returned as within the forest of Copeland, and it is stated that
the tenants there paid yearly to the lord, for "the freelage of their tolls
through all the markets and fairs in Copeland, a certain custom called
Door-toll, viz., for every tenements' door, 2d," which then amounted to 6s. 10d.
The sum total of the rents in Kinniside reached £6 18s. 5d.
2 Greenhew - payment for the privilege of
gathering wood, otherwise known as woodsilver.
The lands within Eskdale
and Mitredale manors,
save only two tenements, have lately been enfranchised, and are now discharged
of fines, heriots, and customary services, except the payments of door-toll, and
greenhew, doing suit and service at the leet and court baron, and riding
Ravenglass fair on St. James's day, the 5th of August, when the tenants of the
manor are bound to join in the procession. William Hutchinson's "History of
the County of Cumberland", Vol. I published in 1794
