John Russells Proposal for a Watercourse to a Mill
"The Humble Petition of John Russell of Langray Green" to the Earl of Egremont:
Russell owns a close called Allans within the said tenement, "on which he Proposes to erect a Mill & Machinery for Carding of Wool". He asks the Earl's permission to take from the River Mite as much water "as may be necessary for working one Carding Machine for Carding Wool for the Term of 40 years", proposing a yearly rent payment of 10/6 "and return the water again into the River as soon as it has Passed his Mill as may be at his own Expence"....
Note in margin that if the mill stops work before the term is finished, rent payments to cease.
