The Will of Elizabeth Swindell
of Weston upon Trent, written 1680, proved 1683

In the name of god Amen the Fower and twentieth day of August in the yeare of our Lord God one thousand six hundred and Eighty I Elizabeth Swindell of Weston upon Trent in the County of Darby Widdow beinge well in body & sound mynd and memory (praised bee god) yet consideringe the certainty of death And the incertainty of the tyme when doe make and ordaine this my last will and Testament in manner following:  

Imprimis I give and comend my soule into the hands of Almighty god hopeinge in and through the meritts and mediacion of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour to receive remission of all my Sinns & everlastinge Joy and felicity.  And my body I commit to the Earth to bee decently buryed at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named.  And as to my worldly goods, I give and dispose the same as followeth And whereas Thomas Swindell my late husband was heretofore and at the time of his death really indebted to severall persons in severall greate summes of money a greate part whereof are still unpaid.  And as well for payment of his said debts as for raiseinge of severall porcions by him devised to his & my Sonns Henry, Thomas and John Swindell did make mee the said Elizabeth Executrix of his last will and Testament As by the same will may appeare Now if the said Elizabeth beinge desirous my said husbands will should bee performed & his suits debts & legacyes paid soe farr as his & my estate will extend unto doe give and bequeath all my goods and chattells whatsoever and herein after given & disposed unto my twoe Sonnes George & Robert Swindell for the payment of my said husbands debts & the porcions by him given unto my said Sonnes Henry Thomas & John.  

Item: I give and bequeath to all and every of my Grand Children the sonnes and daughters of Humfrey Viccars and John Seale And Nicholas Swindell to each of them twelve pence a piece.  

Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Hanna Seale the wife of John Seale one gray Silke Pettycoate.  

Item: all the rest and residue of my wearing Apparrell aswell lynnen and wollen I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Hanna Seale and my twoe Grandaughters Mary Viccars and Elizabeth Viccars to bee equally divided amongst them part & part alike.  

Item: I give & bequeath unto my Sonne George the wood and Timber that is now lying in the yard toward the repaire of Bucknalls farme howse.  

Item I give and bequeath to my Sonne John one of my Best Fether beades with Boulster Pillowe twoe paire of Sheets pillow beares blanckettes and Coverledd and halfe a dozen of Napkyns and a table Cloth. 

And I doe hereby make and appoint my said Sonnes George Swindell and Robert Swindell Executors of this my last will and testament hereby desireinge them to bee aiding and assisting to each other in the performing of this my will and particulerly I desire and chardge my said sonne Robert to bee aiding and assisting to his brother George soe farr as possibly lyeth in his power In witnes whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale the day and yeare abovesaid.

Let probate of this will and administration of the goods of the deceased be made to Robert Swyndell, the executor, named in the same, but with similar power of administration to George Swyndell, the other executor, named in the same, when he comes and seeks this in form of law. Robert sworn before me John Chirie.
