The Will of Mathew Hartley 1657

In the Name of God Amen: The tenth day of July
Ano. Doni. 1657 I Mathew Hartley of Eskdale in the pish of
St Bees & Countie of Comberland sicke in body but pfect in mind
& memorie (praysed be God) Doe ordaine & make this my last
Will & Testamt in manner and forme as followeth, first I
give & bequeath my Soule into the mercyfull handes of Christ
Jesus my Saviour & Redeemer and my body to be buryed in the
Churchyard of Eskdale and all duties dew for the same
to be discharged & paide. Alsoe I give to my Daughter Dorathy
Hartley a blacke cowe which was breede at my housse, to be
delivered to her, when my wyffe is willinge to spare her It. I
give to my daughter Bridgett, the lesser of the great Chystes,
and I give to Agnes my Daughter the Greater. Alsoe I
give to my daughter Bridgett fourttie shillinges to be paide
unto her upon Candlemas day next comeinge. Alsoe I
give to my daughter Isabel a rede Heffer and my wyffe to
deliver these severall Cattell or the price of them at such tymes
as she shall think most fitt & convenient for my daughters,
Alsoe I give to my daughter Jennett an Iron pott, but my
Wyffe to have the use of it, for longe as she liveth, Alsoe I
Give to my daughter Elizabeth, all the loose woode which
Belonges to me in the litle house. Executors of this my
Will I make my sixe daughters viz Elizabeth Hartley,
Bridgett Hartley, Agnes Hartley, Jennett Hartley, Isabell
Hartley, and Dorathy Hartley, to whom I give the rest
of my Goodes, they paying my debts legacies and
Funerall expences. Witnesses hereof Willm. Sharpe &
Elizabeth Sharpe.

2    Matthew's wife is evidently still living - and apparently expected to run the farm - at the time of the will.
