The earliest recorded unconnected Swindales (in the north-east) appear to be John Swindale, who witnessed a marriage in Hexham in 1653, Richard Swindal who married Margaret Foster in Hexham in1667, Jane Swindale who married Thomas Milburn in St John Lee in 1683, I(sabel?) Swindall with an illegitimate child in 1709 in Hexham and John Swindale with a child in Hexham/St John Lee in 1718. The lack of earlier references may simply reflect the fact that most parish registers only started in the second half of the 17th century or indicate that a Swindale moved into the area in the early/middle of the 17th century.
