Notes

This is definitely the Christopher who married Esther Pert since he is identified in the marriage registry as Christopher, widower, son of Christopher. Esther is living with him at the time of the 1841 census. He is also identified as the father of Hannah and Christopher in the 1851 census. His first wife is therefore Mary - presumably Mary Press - and this Christopher can be assumed to be the father of Thomas. This Christopher was therefore living at Black Cleugh after his marriage - as was his father's cousin Christopher. (It is just possible that this older Christopher was the husband of Mary Press and/or the father of John and Thomas). The parents of John (d.1830) are not identified but it would appear probable that he was the first son of Mary Press.

John and Thomas were born at Black Cleugh, Hannah at Whitelee Shield, and Christopher through to Sarah at Limestone Brae.

Esther was living with Christopher as a female servant at the time of the 1841 census at the beginning of June.

John's birth in 1848 was registered as John Swindale according to Norman Swindle 30/12/05. (First quarter 1848 Hexham FreeBMD 25 278).

Marriage register listed as Swindle but signed Swindel. IGI has Swindale. Swindle in GRO.
