1    Living at Hartley Cleugh and working as a Lead Miner in 1861. Listed in the 1871 census as a coal miner at Acomb forge. Working as a coal miner at Cowpen, Northumberland (between Blyth and Morpeth) at the time of the 1881 census (a widower).

2    This Hugh Swindle is registered as being born in the Hexham area of Northumberland. This includes Allendale and West Allen.

3    Mary remarried after Hugh's death, to William Robson White in 1889. The birth registration for their son William Robson White in 1890 gives his mother's maiden name as Laws.
