0    Text in red represents information obtained from the internet (family trees etc) which I have not yet confirmed.

1    There are only two John Swinney births registered in 1886 - John Clark Swinney in the first quarter and John Laws Swinney in the second quarter. It is far more likely that a birth on the 27th of March would be registered in the second quarter.

2    Served in Royal Navy 9/7/06 to 21/1/11; mobilized 2 Aug 1914. Wounded in Dardanelles and invalided out 23 Feb 1916. Did this contribute to his early death in 1919?

3    Both John and his brother George married a Turnbull. Information from the Army pension records and from the 1939 Register positively identifies some as the children of George. John died in the third quarter of 1919. It appears that George and Ann moved across the Tyne to Gateshead by 1919. This indicates that Mary S L Swinney and Leslie Swinney are not children of George and Ann

4    Obviously Ann and Frances have different mothers. Since Ann, by virtue of her name, is more likely to be the child of George Swinney and Ann Ritchie Turnbull then Frances is more likely to the the daughter of John Laws Swinney and Sarah Turnbull.

5    Mary S L Swinney would be a posthumous child of John.

a)    1891 UK census    The three orphaned children are found with their great-aunt Hannah Crodace and great-grandmother 'Lucteria Crodace' in Heworth in 1891.
1901 UK census    The three siblings are still with their great-aunt Annah Crodass and great-grandmother Lucrecia Crodace' in Heworth. George is a coal miner.
1911 UK census    The family is still together, living with Elizabeth who has married. John is now a labourer on the tramways.
1939 Register        A Sarah A Turnbull, widow, is living in Longbenton with (illegitimate son?) Leslie
