Notes

1    Since John at the age of 23 apparently had a 10 year old son, and at 32 had a 20 year old stepson Thomas Cowing, it  seems that John either married a widow, Sarah Cowing or that Sarah had had an illegitimate son.

The birth of a Thomas Cowing, mother's maiden name not stated, was registered in the third quarter of 1860. This suggests that he may have been illegitimate.

The only Thomas Cowing of the right age found in the 1861 census is Thomas Cowing Smith, son of Joseph Smith and Rachel (Cowing) Smith in Knarsdale, north of Alston. He may, however, actually be the son of Sarah Cowing, 16, a servant in Knarsdale. A Sarah Cowing, illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Cowing, was baptised in 1845 in Alston.

No marriage of a Cowing to a Sarah has been found in the north of England 1850 - 1861.

Sarah gives her maiden name as Cowing in the birth certificates for her children by John Swindle.

The above strongly suggests that Thomas Cowing was illegitimate (and that Sarah was 4 or 5 years younger than she states).
