Notes

Text in red represents information obtained from the internet (family trees etc) which I have not yet confirmed.

Sending Alfred to boarding school must have been quite a financial sacrifice, even on an engineer's wages.

In 1891 there is a John Swinney aged 65 (ie born c1826) born Ireland in the Chester le Street workhouse. He was a labourer in the iron works.

In 1911 there is in Bournemouth an Elizbeth Swinney, widow, 78, born Bath, Somerset with a servant Mary Patterson born in Witton Gilbert.

John could have died any time between 1881 and 1911. The death registeed in 1900 could be this John or the Irish John Swinney. There is a death of a John Swinney registered in 1894 in the Poole district.
