1    Baptised Swindler; 1841 census Swindale; 1851 census Swindle; both marriage registration Swindler; Charles registered as Swindlay; 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 census Swindle. Andrew's birth registered Swindle but death Swindles. Margaret and Nicholas's births were registered as Swindlay; threst of the births were Swindle apart from the second Joseph who was Swindley!

2    No death registration found for Nicholas's first wife Jane.

3    Ann Farrer's children by her first marriage were, according to the 1871 census

4    "Usworth Colliery, near where I live, was renamed Inkerman after the battle, but the name did not "stick", and a row of houses built nearby (now demolished) was Alma Row. "
