William appears to have moved to L0ndon by 1863 where he married and worked as a Stationer. By 1881 he had settled at 11, Royal Oak Place in Camberwell, near Dulwich, where he remained till at least 1901 and probably died there in 1905.

Notes

1    William was not with his mother Ann and brother Lancelot at the time of the 1841 census, nor with his father Robert. Listed with the family in 1851.

2    Surname Swindle in the baptismal register, Swindell in 1851, Swindle in 1861.

3    The death of a William Swindle aged 55 was registered in Easington in the second quarter of 1891, but this will be William Swindale.

4    The death of William Swindale aged 71 was registered in the third quarter of 1905 in Lewisham (FreeBMD 1d 592). Although the age is slightly incorrect, the location makes this highly probable. William was listed at Lee in Kent in the 1901 census.

5    The birth of a Mary Ann Sinclair was registered in Greenwich in the fourth quarter of 1838 (FreeBMD 5 218) - in the censuses her place of birth is given as Woolwich. The death of Mary Ann Swindale at the age of 63 was registered at Lewisham in the first quarter of 1902 (FreeBMD 1d 759)

6    1861 UK census    Not this coal miner (28) boarding in Seaton Colliery. The Northumberland 1861 census gives his age as 28 rather than 25, but the place of birth, Brunton Row, is Walwick. However in 1891 there is again a William Swindle, coal miner, born c1835 in Brunton Row, who cannot be the William living in London. Probably William Swindle.

7    At 11 Royal Oak Place from at least 1877 when William was executor to his father's will.
